“Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” (Ecclesiastes‬ ‭4:9-10‬a)

One of my favourite childhood memories is competing in the Three-legged Race. With one leg tied to another boy’s I had to run in step with him and compete against other “three-legged” pairs down the racetrack.

Though clumsy at first and every misstep resulted in searing pain around the ankle, my partner and I would eventually discover the secrets of teamwork (i.e., arms around each other, verbal cues, sensitivity to each other’s stride and pace, and practice, practice, practice!)  Consequently, not only would we move quicker in unison, we would catch the other person when either one stumbled and help each other along.  In the end, whether we won or lost we’d have had lots of laughs and bonded closer as friends.

The 2022 theme, “2walk2together” challenges us to journey with one another like partners in the Three-legged Race.  By committing to helping each other we will inadvertently strengthen the bonds within our faith community.

We all understand that no Christian grows alone.  In this inaugural sermon series of 2022 we will examine 5 pairs of mentoring relationships in the Bible.  We will study the intricacies of fostering a spiritual partnership and prepare ourselves for a mentoring seminar later in the spring.

Like contestants in the Three-legged Race, to walk together in the faith journey is hard work.  It requires people to become up-close and personal and, therefore, more vulnerable to getting hurt.  However, mutual support and accountability is the very key to building up the Kingdom of God.  It demands commitment but delivers a good return for the labor.

Amos 3:3 says, “Do two walk together unless they have agreed to do so?”‬‭‬  Let’s agree to do so!

A Living Sacrifice

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

The Lord Calls Samuel

Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where a disciple named Timothy lived, whose mother was Jewish and a believer but whose father was a Greek. 2 The believers at Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him. 3 Paul wanted to take him along on the journey, so he circumcised him because of the Jews who lived in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. 4 As they traveled from town to town, they delivered the decisions reached by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey. 5 So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.

The Lord Calls Samuel

The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.

2 One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place. 3 The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the Lord, where the ark of God was. 4 Then the Lord called Samuel.

The Tent of Meeting

Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the “tent of meeting.” Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8 And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent.
